Maria João Pires

Last week I was listening to NDR radio, here in Hamburg, and Maria Joao Pires came into air-play with her amazing version of "Nocturne No.1" by Chopin. I was driving at the moment but it gave me shivers to listen to the first notes played so organically and the short lapse of time soon after that. The perfect start for a perfect piece by one of the he most eloquent pianists of our time.

Now I learned about her nomination for a Grammy award and felt once again the need to talk about Maria Joao Pires and remember her work. Also remembering that she found herself forced to leave Portugal and go live in Brasil, profoundly deceptioned with the current cultural situation in her home country.

Maria Joao Pires made her first public performance at the age of seven with Mozart’s Piano Concertos in Porto, Portugal, more than 60 years ago. She has appeared all over the globe with all the major orchestras including the Berliner Philharmoniker, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the London Philharmonic, the Orchestre de Paris, and the Wiener Philharmoniker. She is a world aclaimed solo performer (the recent Grammy nomination is for her Solo Performances).

"Maria João Pires, that most elusive and magical of pianists, has been coaxed back into the recording studios for this recital of late Chopin. It is essential listening. You only have to hear the opening notes of the Third Sonata to be reminded of the limpidness of her touch and the subtlety with which she inflects her rhythm and phrasing. But none of this is self-conscious. It is as if she were a natural conduit through which the music passes directly from Chopin to the attentive ear. She seems to be the very embodiment of Chopin's style, its grace, melancholy, nobility and finesse." in Record Review / The Daily Telegraph (London) / 01. June 2009
