Art musique presents an exclusive interview with Pedro Matos, a portuguese painter...
1. when did you realize that painting was your "art"?
2. what made you choose England to study?
I don't. I am still doing my BFA in Painting in Lisbon. But the plan is to move to London as soon as possible.
3. how would you define your style?
I wouldn't. I am not interested in labels..
4. for you as an artist, does the perception of your work by the public and critics really matter?
I paint for myself firstly, and I try not to think about any of that on the moment I am creating. However, it's always very nice to see people responding to my work.
5. how far are you willing to go in search of originality?
I believe thats something that has to come naturally.
6. which other artists influence you?
Too many to count.. But some of them are Rembrandt, Caravaggio, Micallef, Conor Harrington, Greg Simkins, Charlie Isoe, etc.
7. why the dicotomy of old people vs children very present on your work?
It's not really that way. I was painting children for the first 2 years, and then moved into a different subject matter..
8. what's next? tell us your plans for the future.
I am working for my next solo show in Bristol next summer. I am also working on releasing a glicée print for 2010.

1. when did you realize that painting was your "art"?
About 4 years ago. I wanted to be a pro skater, but skateboarding introduced me to a a lot of the artists that inspired me to start painting, and still inspire me today.
